Thesis Title: Remembering, Representing, and Re-imagining the Kindertransport: an Analysis of Literary Genres.
My current research explores how the Kindertransport is portrayed across three literary genres: Kindertransportee memoirs, autobiographical fiction, and recent fiction written by authors who have no personal connection to the Kindertransport. By examining how these authors portray the Kindertransport experience, and how they access and engage with the past, I aim to examine in which ways the Kindertransport is being remembered and transmitted onto future generations. My thesis will engage with theories of cultural memory (including postmemory), trauma, and narratology and will engage in debates at the heart of discussions on Holocaust memory: the limits of representability and the 'unspeakability' of trauma. - Supervisor:
