German-speaking Women Writers Exiled in Britain
I am exploring the sense of identity and Heimat in the personal lives and artistic output of six German-speaking women who, whether out of choice or necessity, emigrated to Britain after 1933. I have chosen four writers to focus on, all hailing from different parts of the German-speaking world, and all with very different approaches to representing their idea of home through their creative work.
I am currently researching: Gerda Mayer, Gabriele Tergit, Eva Priester and Ruth Feiner. Through use of Heimat theory, Edward Said's writings on exile, translingualism and nomadism, I seek to discover the varying concepts of Heimat and self among these women.
