Research Summary and Profile

Research interests:
Language and Literature (French), Literatures in a modern language
Summary of research interests and expertise:

I joined the IMLR in 2015, having previously worked in professional theatre and academia in France. Rather unsurprisingly perhaps, my main area of scholarship expertise is therefore in contemporary French theatre. My book, (Re)telling Old Stories, honed in on two productions by directors Peter Brook and Ariane Mnouchkine. Through specific analysis of their work, I outlined general characteristics of the theatrical field in the eighties and nineties.

From October 2017, I will be the Principal Investigator of an AHRC-funded project entitled Literature under Constraint (LUC). The  LUC project assembles a cutting-edge network of researchers and stakeholders (publishers, writers and librarians) from the UK, Europe and North America to investigate how literary production in France from 1980 to the present has been shaped by political, cultural and socio-economic constraints.

Over the course of 18 months, the network will assemble a cross-disciplinary research team that includes experts in French literature, sociology and related fields (translation studies, book history). The research team will meet for three study days to examine evolutions of style and genre with respect to the shifting constraints on writers. The aim is to elucidate which factors (mind-sets, political context, social environments, intermediaries) shape and constrain literary production, but also to explore whether constraint bolsters creative activity.

Key Interests: French Theatre (Writing, Directorial Practices, Institutions); Contemporary French and Francophone Literature; Restoration Drama (Adaptations of French plays on the English Stage); Comparative Approaches to Beckett

27-Nov-2017 Glynn, D, 'War Remembered on Stage as Reims Stages Europe: Festival Report'

The following reports back on the 2015 edition of the Reims Scènes d’Europe (literally: Reims Stages Europe) theatre festival, which has grown to become a leading counterpoint to the more established summer gathering at Avignon. The 2015 festival was particularly memorable for two reasons: one, it took place a month after the Charlie Hebdo attacks; and two, it was part of the memorial celebrations for World War I. On the opening night, two contrasting shows were on offer: Ludovic Lagarde’s staging of La Baraque [The Pad], a new play by Aiat Fayez fittingly commissioned as part of the European anti-terrorism cultural initiative; and Luk Perceval’s Front. In one, the audience is invited to consider recent events through the lens of slapstick humour; the other returns to the Western front of 100 years ago. The contrast between the two productions on offer raises an issue that will traverse the whole festival. How might, on the one hand, distance be created in the presentation of recent events, and, on the other, events far-removed in the past be brought closer to contemporary audiences?

23-Mar-2018 Mediating Literature Study Day

What has happened to French literature over the last 40 years? The first study day of the AHRC Literature under Constraint project looks at shifts in the creative and publishing landscapes in France and francophone countries from 1980 to the present day. We’ll be studying the role of intermediaries (agents, publishers, distributors, journalists) on the production of literature and we'll examine how the emergence of digital landscapes has been a game-changer and think about what literature means in the 21st Century.
