Project summary:

The Institute of Historical Research (IHR) proposes to publish as a web ontology the BBIH subject classification of 8,800 terms for British and Irish History. This will provide a comprehensive, standard resource for all British and Irish history projects wishing to expose their data and link it to other projects using RDF (Resource Description Framework). To test the methodology two projects will be used. The results and methods will be communicated by online tutorials (using the examples) and workshops aimed at various stakeholders including public engagement. The thesaurus will be marked up as SKOS, the Simple Knowledge Organization System (http://www.w3.org/2004/02/skos/), which is particularly appropriate for thesauri. It is relatively simple to use, making it well placed for take-up by historical projects, while integrating well with the OWL ontologies for those projects which wish to use it.
