Date Details 14-Feb-2014 Afro-Cuban Religious Arts: Popular Expressions of Cultural Inheritance in Espiritismo and Santería Monographs
Forthcoming from the University Press of Florida, 'Afro-Cuban Religious Arts' traces the work of four generations of women from Havana, Cuba, to Spanish Harlem, New York, from 1899 to 1969. The author examines the impact of their personal archives of photographs, notes and surviving altar fragments in defining women’s leadership roles within Afro-Cuban religious arts practices. The book argues that through the careful documentation of their work, these leaders created an impressive account of hybrid cultural identities— with references to African and European cultural inheritances—that promoted dialogue among their audiences. These interactions were essential for the explosion of African diasporic religious arts throughout the Americas and beyond.
