Summary of research interests and expertise:

Dr. Tom Packer’s research interests extend across the range of US history and US politics but particularly focuses on late twentieth century political, racial, southern and religious history. He will join the ISA in October after taking his doctorate . Dr Packer is currently writing a monograph on ‘Jesse Helms, the Rise of Southern Republicanism and the End of the Old South which provides revisionist account of Jesse Helms and his associates in the period 1950-2000. Senator Helms's career provides a lens through which one can explore many historical themes- from the integration of the south into United States political economy, to visions of American Foreign Policy to he rise of the American Conservatism can be examined and brought together. His longer term project is a history of post New Deal Southern Conservatism.
